Action in Africa was established in 1997 to form a long term link between the peoples of Ashtead in England and the district surrounding the village of Nyaishozi in Tanzania. Nyaishozi is in the far north west of Tanzania, that area south of Uganda, between Lake Victoria and the Rwandan border. There are some 45,000 people living in this area.

The origin came more than 10 years earlier when Fr Simeon Katama, the parish priest of Nyaishozi who had visited Ashtead while studying in Rome, appealed for help to support his two orphan nieces. The scope of the work has steadily grown ever since.
Many charities concentrate on a single issue such as famine relief, providing water or tackling a major disease such as AIDS or malaria and their scope is world wide. Action in Africa has decided to go the opposite way by concentrating on one area and we are pledged to stay with those people. Rather than focusing on a single problem our work covers most aspects of their lives.
Our first priority is education believing that in the long term this is the only sure road to raising living standards and improving the quality of life. At the same time we cannot ignore the urgent need for help with healthcare. We are also starting schemes for wealth and job creation.
AIMS
Education - to provide support in every way possible; primarily by sponsoring students who would otherwise not be able to afford education
Healthcare - to help overcome the terrible endemic problems of AIDS and malaria but also to provide basic everyday health services. We support through an annual subsidy a clinic in the
village of Nyaishozi. This covers the costs for malaria tablets, moscito nets and educational visits by the Nursing staff.
Relief of Poverty – to help to build economic development, to assist job and wealth creation.
